Come join us in May for the 9th Film Gathering! This year we are going to Charleston, as requested by so many of you … one of the top wedding destinations in the United States, home to thousands of trees dripping with spanish moss, and hundreds of historic and unique homes. Walking through the French Quarter will transport you to a different era, while the plantation settings will take you straight into the scenes of movies you’ve probably seen, like The Notebook (which was filmed here!) It’s truly a place unlike any other, and we will experience it all this time from the heart of the city.
For past retreats, we have gone further from civilization to have peace, and tranquility – often into the mountains. This retreat will be different because we will be staying in a 3 story restored historic mansion, right in the heart of the city of Charleston, several blocks from well known places like historic King Street. This will open up opportunities for photo walks around the city and in the historic French Quarter, where there is literally something new and unique to see around every corner. We will go to some local plantation settings, where a styled wedding shoot will be set against the backdrop of beautiful spanish moss and ancient live oak trees.
We will have something for everyone, regardless of your level of film photography experience, or whether you’re a professional or hobbyist. We will take advantage of the historic beauty of the city and home, and introduce you to much of the local flavor in scenery, as well as food. We will have a wedding styled shoot, and a lifestyle shoot, and will also be adding a variation of the Film After Dark class, taught by Brent Deitrich and focusing on how to properly shoot film when there is no natural light available. We will have time for our traditional roundtables, and of course there will be time allotted for socializing and relaxing, the cornerstone of this event!
The Film Gathering doesn’t end after each event, either. Each event has it’s own online group where you can continue to interact with your newfound cheerleaders and friends well after the retreat is over, ask questions, share your photos from the event, and continue to learn and be encouraged. You’ll have a new support network behind you as you continue on your film journey.
Brent Deitrich – Creator of The Film Gathering, and owner of Live View Studios, Brent has a heart for building community and helping other photographers to learn in a non-competitive environment. Brent is also the publisher of The White Wren, a new wedding publication which launched in Spring 2017 and is growing rapidly. He loves woodworking, trips to the mountains, and eclectic food dives. He shoots both medium format and 35mm film, but believes that 35mm is often highly underrated. His work has been published all over the world in fine art film publications. @liveviewstudios @thewhitewren @brent.d_lvs
Morgane Erisman – Hailing from the mountains of Switzerland, Morgane came into The Film Gathering team last year as the new associate photographer for Live View Studios. We try as hard as we can to keep The Film Gathering affordable for everyone. Still, it takes a lot of behind the scenes work, other vendors, and finances to pull off a successful event. Taking the event to Charleston is way more expensive than any other destination we’ve done before. Keeping the registration under $1,000 is a marvel in itself, as most workshops that have the caliber of industry professionals that we bring in exceed that by a wide margin. We are doing this as part of our love for the community, not for profit. And, we are quite pleased that our registration is all-inclusive with lodging and meals. The fellowship and conversation that is a result of everyone staying in the same house is unprecedented, and vital for community building.
Regular Registration is $925 / Early Registration is open until April 15, 2018 for $780 (two payments of $390).
Since we are a family-friendly event, spouses can also be included for an additional $350.
If you are flying in, your airport option is:
Charleston International Airport
VERY IMPORTANT: One of the big challenges of having the retreat in Charleston is a lack of parking. There is no parking available at the house we are staying at except for available street parking which is not guaranteed, so if you drive in, you will need to park in a nearby parking garage at around $10 / day. If you are flying in, we highly recommending taking an Uber or Lyft to the house (we will provide you with the address upon registration).
The Film Gathering is open to 14 attendees so we can keep our retreat intimate and personal, and to ensure that everyone gets plenty of time for photographing and learning without a rushed environment. You can pay in full in advance, or do a 50/50 payment option, with the balance due by April 15, 2018.
